Carmine paced along the main entrance to the woods, huffing with an arched copper back. It was my first time seeing the sol’s wolf form, and it was impressive. I could feel his disappointment as I approached. “Patrol last night was fine. It was raining, though, and I must have missed a scent trail.”

“It was raining,” I thought out loud. “But since when are ghouls smart?”

“Fucking never. But these ghouls and those bat creatures aren’t like any I’ve encountered. I smell no fear on them. No fear of wolves? You can see why we’ve been confounded. And they just waltzed into Fenrir undetected, leaving carcasses to taunt us.”

I rubbed my chin as Apollo skittered to a stop, kicking up rocks as he did. Typical teenage sol. Too much energy; not enough sense. “Whole pack’s accounted for, Wolfgang, sir.”

“I’m adding you to the patrol. And your friends. Anyone not a pup is acting as patrol. We’re doubling our security protocols, and when you’re not on watch duty, I want you pulling weeds. Send the others to me for their tasks. There’s a lot to be done around here.”

“That’s a lot of work for a young one,” Carmine challenged. “Seems like a lot of work for the women, too.”

My jaw tensed. “Seems like there’s a lot that needs fixing in Fenrir. Mend the chicken coop when you’re off watch. Your job as a sol in this pack is in service of the lunas, same as me, so watch your fucking attitude. As far as I’m concerned, this breech is on you, Carmine. It wouldn’t have happened if the lunas were guarding in your place.”

He huffed in annoyance and continued pacing.

Before I was out of earshot, I asked him, “Where’s the lead phantom usually stationed?”

“I don’t know. He’s always come to us. But I’d guess he’s with the circus. They’re just outside the town line of Ash Grove. Hard to smell, though.”

Like I’d suspected, it looked like I’d be getting another ticket to the circus.
